About Your Goals Your Life
1. What is Your Goals Your Life?
Your Goals Your Life (YGYL) helps people turn the things they want to change, achieve or experience into practical goals and actions.
We focus on goal clarity, planning, preparation and accountability. Our aim is to help you move beyond simply wishing for a better life and start making meaningful progress towards one.
2. Who is YGYL for?
YGYL is for people who want to make positive changes in their lives but may need help deciding what matters most, working out where to begin or staying on track.
You might have one specific goal in mind, several competing priorities or a general feeling that you want something in your life to change.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start.
3. What kinds of goals can I work on?
Goals can relate to many areas of life, including:
- Health & Vitality — improving fitness, energy or everyday habits.
- Money & Freedom — improving saving habits, financial organisation or flexibility.
- Career & Business — developing your career, skills or business.
- Love & Relationships — strengthening connections and building relationships.
- Personal Growth & Experiences — learning new skills, exploring interests or taking on new experiences.
- Purpose & Meaning — clarifying your values, direction or contribution.
These areas can overlap. The best place to start is usually the area that matters most to you right now.
4. Do I need to know exactly what my goal is?
No. You can start with a broad idea, such as wanting to feel healthier, improve your finances or make a career change.
Part of the goal-setting process is turning that initial idea into something clearer and more practical. You can refine your goal as you learn more about what you want and what is realistic for your circumstances.
5. Do I have to change every area of my life?
Absolutely not.
The six life areas are there to help you consider the bigger picture, not to give you six more things to worry about.
Trying to change too many things at once can make it harder to focus. Start with one meaningful priority, then review what you want to tackle next.
Getting Started
6. How do I get started with YGYL?
Start with our Start Here page. It introduces the YGYL approach and helps you explore the areas of life you may want to improve.
You can then visit Setting Goals for practical guidance or explore our free resources.
Your first step: visit Start Here and decide what you’d most like to work towards.
7. What if I’ve tried setting goals before and failed?
You’re not alone. A goal can lose momentum for many reasons: it may not have been clearly defined, the plan may have been unrealistic, life may have become busy, or unexpected obstacles may have appeared.
Rather than treating every setback as failure, we encourage you to review what happened, learn from it and decide what needs to change.
Sometimes that means adjusting the plan. Sometimes it means choosing a different goal. The important thing is to make a considered decision rather than giving up on yourself.
8. How do I know whether my goal is realistic?
A useful goal takes account of your starting point, available time, resources, existing responsibilities and likely obstacles.
You don’t have to know every answer immediately. Start by identifying what you want to achieve, how you’ll recognise progress and what preparation may be needed.
Your plan should challenge you without ignoring your real-life circumstances.
9. What if I have several goals I want to achieve?
Write them down so you can see the bigger picture. Then consider their importance, urgency, practical requirements and how much time and energy each would need.
You may be able to make progress on more than one goal, but it often helps to identify a primary goal and avoid overcommitting yourself.
You can return to other goals when you have more capacity or when your priorities change.
Planning and Accountability
10. What is the difference between setting a goal and achieving it?
Setting a goal means deciding what you want to accomplish. Achieving it usually requires additional steps: planning, preparation, consistent action, progress reviews and adjustments when things don’t go to plan.
YGYL focuses on the journey between deciding what you want and taking the practical steps that move you towards it.
11. What does accountability mean?
Accountability means creating a way to check whether you’re following through on the actions you’ve committed to taking.
That might involve reviewing your progress each week, recording completed actions, identifying obstacles or sharing your commitments with someone you trust.
Good accountability should help you learn and move forward, not make you feel ashamed when progress is slower than expected.
12. Do I need an accountability partner?
No. An accountability partner is optional.
Some people find it useful to share their goal and progress with a trusted friend, family member or other willing supporter. Others prefer to review their progress privately.
If you involve another person, make sure they understand what you’re asking of them and agree to participate. Share only the information you are comfortable sharing.
13. What should I do when I lose motivation or fall behind?
First, work out what is getting in the way. Your next step might be to simplify the task, reduce the time commitment, find a missing resource, address an obstacle or reconsider your timeframe.
You may also need rest or a revised goal if your circumstances have changed.
A setback does not automatically mean your goal is wrong. It is an opportunity to review the approach and choose a sensible next step.
